NIRVANA SUTRAOut of the various scriptures that exist in Buddhism, the Mahaparinirvana Sutra (or Nirvana Sutra, in short) has a central role in Shinnyo-en's teachings, although the other sutras of Buddhism are also part of Shinnyo-en's doctrinal foundations. The sutra opens with the Buddha about to give his final teaching. Surrounded by his disciples, he says that after he is gone he will live on in his teachings and expresses his wish that everyone, including lay people, cultivate their latent buddha nature. This means to bring forth one's joyful self-achievement of nirvana, in other words, overcome sufferings and attachments that arise out of misconceptions. |
