A BUDDHIST LIFE

The historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, preached that wisdom arises naturally through perseverance and practical experience. He encouraged acting with compassion and concern for the welfare of others.

In order to cultivate these, traditional observances and ceremonies are held at temples in addition to Shinnyo-en's form of meditative training, called sesshin ("touching the essence"). Also, just as in Shakyamuni's era, a supportive structure is in place through which to mentor people. This facilitates individualized guidance and the linking of the teachings to real life and each person's unique circumstances.
