Shinjo Ito (Kyoshu) born.

Tomoji Ito (Shojushinin) born.

Shinjo and Tomoji enshrine an Achala image attributed to the famous Buddhist sculptor Unkei (13th century).

1936
February 8
Shinjo and Tomoji embark on their religious path.
May 19
Shinjo takes vows at Daigoji monastery, the headquarters of the Daigo school of Shingon Buddhism.

Dedication of Shinchoji (Shinnyo-en's first temple). (Photo below, second from left)

Shinjo completes lay-oriented Buddhist training and undergoes the Ein Initiation at Daigoji.

1943
March 5
Shinjo completes monastic Buddhist training and receives the rank of Great Acharya (Great Master) from Daigoji, which allows him to establish his own independent denomination.

Daughter Shinso Ito (Keishu) born; present Head of Shinnyo-en.

1953

The name "Shinnyo-en" is officially recognized by the government.

Consecration of Reclining Nirvana Buddha, Shinnyo-en's main image.

Shinjo and Tomoji accept Buddha relics presented by the Thai monastery Wat Paknam.
November 5-15
Shinjo and Tomoji invited to attend conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists in Thailand. On the way back, they visit India, Hong Kong and Taiwan and hold local meeting.

1967
June 11-July 4
Shinjo and Tomoji visit Europe on religious goodwill mission; visit Buddhist centers, the world council of churches, universities; meet Roman Catholic Pope Paul VI and pledge to work for mutual religious cooperation. (Photos lower right)

Tomoji passes away at age 55; receives highest priestly rank, Daisojo (Archbishop), from Daigoji.

Dedication of Grand Holy (Genesis) Temple.

October 6-23
Shinjo visits North America for first time and meets the local followers.

First sanctuary outside Japan dedicated in Hawaii.

1982
August 29
First sanctuary in continental U.S. dedicated in San Francisco.

1985
September 8
First Asian sanctuary outside Japan dedicated in Taipei, Taiwan.
October 13
First sanctuary in Europe dedicated in Paris.

July 19
Shinjo passes away at age 83.

Daughter Shinso officially becomes Head of Shinnyo-en and Head Priest of Shinchoji.

Shinso receives highest priestly rank, Daisojo (Archbishop), from Daigoji

1997
September 11
Shinnyo Samaya Hall dedicated at Daigoji. Shinso becomes the first woman to ever conduct a service at the monastery's main hall in the 1,100-year history of Daigoji.

First Saito Homa (outdoor fire ritual) ever held outside Japan, at Shinnyo-en U.K.

First Water Consolatory Service and Lantern Floating Ceremony ever held outside Japan, in Hawaii.

2000
April 14-15
First Saito Homa service ever held in the U.S., outside Los Angeles.

2001
July 19
"Shinnyo Stupa" consecrated at Grand Head Temple, in founders' memory.

2002
July 12-21
Concerts held in European churches ("A Millennium of Resonance") with cooperation of Roman Catholic dioceses. Shinso Ito meets Pope John Paul II at Vatican.

2003
June 26-27
Saito Homa is held in France.
